FreshLens, established in 2017, is a tuition-free photography program for underserved Chicago youth using visual storytelling to support youth development. Through hands-on instruction, students use photography as a tool for self-expression, creative confidence, and personal growth. While not all participants pursue photography careers, the program builds transferable skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and professionalism that extend into education, careers, and life.

Over the past decade, FreshLens has expanded its reach to serve youth across 53 Chicago zip codes. By prioritizing BIPOC and low-income students and eliminating all participation costs, FreshLens ensures equitable access to high-quality arts education. To date, students have earned 550 cameras to keep, enabling continued creative practice beyond the classroom. In 2025, FreshLens offered 16 classes at its home base and through community partners on Chicago’s West and South Sides.

FreshLens intentionally develops leaders and instructors from the same communities and life experiences as the studentsit serves. The organization employs 11 teaching artists, nearly all people of color, including four FreshLens alumni. This model strengthens representation, mentorship, and long-term leadership within the communities served.
