Later, they attended the Naval Postgraduate School from 1992 to 1994, where they earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security Affairs.

In addition to their formal education, David Schnell also obtained several certifications. In 1985, they received a Commercial Aircraft Pilot certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. In 1994, they obtained a Total Quality Leadership certification from the US Navy. Finally, in 2008, they completed a Lean Six Sigma Champion Certification program at WBB Consulting.
