Carl Edwards is a Senior Research Scientist at Genentech, specializing in natural language processing (NLP) for scientific, chemical, and drug discovery. Currently a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Carl’s research focuses on synthesizing vast information to accelerate scientific discovery, particularly in chemistry literature through involvement with the Molecule Maker Lab NSF AI Institute. Carl has also held research positions at notable institutions including Carnegie Mellon University and the Allen Institute for AI, while actively contributing to the academic community as a lead organizer for the Language + Molecules Workshop at ACL 2024. Carl earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, graduating with a 3.99 GPA.
