Robert van Engelen has an extensive work experience spanning over two decades. From 1998 to 2003, they were a Professor of Computer Science and Scientific Computing at Florida State University, where they were also a member of the FSU HPC Advisory Board and RCC Advisory Panel, and initiated and coordinated the Internship Program. In 2003, they founded and became CEO of Genivia Inc, and also served as a Fundraiser and Sponsor, raising funds for the Genivia Fund for Entrepreneurship, supporting the local incubator Domi Station, and supporting various student-focused events. Since 2014, they have been a Technical Advisor for various companies such as NewSci LLC, The Captiveyes Group LLC, Cuttlesoft, PointCatcher, LobbyQ, Benefit Service Company, and SoFitU. Additionally, they have been a Mentor for Domi Ventures LLC since 2014.

Robert van Engelen began their educational journey in 1986 at Strabrecht College, where they completed their VWO Atheneum (pre-university secondary education & high school). Robert then attended Vrije School Brabant, where they completed their high school education. From 1988 to 1994, Robert attended Utrecht University, where they earned a BS and MS in Wiskunde en Informatica (Computer Science). Finally, Robert earned their PhD in Informatica (Computer Science) from Leiden University between 1994 and 1998.
