Alex Mitchell

Director Of Bioinformatics

Alex Mitchell is an experienced bioinformatician currently serving as the Director of Bioinformatics at Genpax since March 2024, where innovative work on the IDEM surveillance tool enhances infectious disease investigation through whole genome sequencing analysis. Prior to this role, Alex held the position of Director of Bioinformatics at Eagle Genomics Ltd. from May 2020 to March 2024, addressing significant microbiome data analysis challenges and previously served as a Senior Bioinformatician there, focusing on advanced bioinformatics analyses. From 2011 to May 2020, Alex coordinated the MGnify microbiome analysis resource and the InterPro protein family database at the European Bioinformatics Institute, overseeing a team of bioinformaticians. Earlier experience includes roles at the University of Manchester in database production and text mining for protein family reports, and as a post-doctoral research scientist at the Institute of Psychiatry. Alex holds a D.Phil. in Neuropharmacology from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience from The University of Sheffield.
