Ian Johnstone has extensive experience in the design industry, particularly in the consumer appliances sector. From 1995 to 1997, they worked as a Junior Designer at Big Blue Product Design. Ian then joined Stoves PLC as an Industrial Designer from 1997 to 1999, and subsequently worked as a Senior Industrial Designer at Stoves Ltd. from 1999 to 2002. In 2002, they joined Glen Dimplex Consumer Appliances as a Product Design Manager until 2005.

Ian then transitioned to Glen Dimplex Group Design in 2005, where they held various roles. Ian started as a Senior Design Manager, overseeing the design management of home appliances and FMCG categories, and developing relationships with OEM suppliers and manufacturing teams in the Far East. From 2014 to 2020, they served as the Strategic Design Manager, leading the development and expansion of the in-house product design function, managing projects and teams across consumer product categories and various brands.

In 2020, Ian became the Head of Consumer Appliance Division for Glen Dimplex. In this role, they led a multidisciplinary design team across three core divisions within the organization, focusing on consumer-led industrial design, sustainability, and technical innovation. In the same year, they also took on the responsibility of Head of Design: Consumer Appliances and Global Flame, leading product and industrial design for Faber and Dimplex brands across a global flame product portfolio.

Ian Johnstone has an education history that includes the following:

- In 2019, they attended the Royal College of Art, where they completed an executive education program in Creative Leadership, specifically focusing on Industrial and Product Design.

- Between 1992 and 1995, Ian Johnstone attended the University of Central Lancashire, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree in Industrial Design.

- From 1991 to 1992, they also attended the University of Central Lancashire, where they pursued a Higher National Diploma in Product Design.

- In 1990-1991, Ian Johnstone attended the Liverpool College of Art, where they completed an Art Foundation Course.
