Going The Distance is an organization founded in 2022 by then high school junior Nicholas Delgado. Starting as a podcast, Going The Distance covered high school running in central Illinois, eventually expanding to statewide events. The show hosted numerous special guests such as local news hosts, all-state runners, and sectional champions.

During that fall cross country season, Going The Distance used its platform to initiate a shoe drive. The shoes were originally donated to an organization who distributed the gently-used shoes to people in need worldwide in return for compensation which was donated to the Morton High School (Morton, IL) cross country team. However, the following spring, Going The Distance shifted their focus more locally and decided to partner with the Salvation Army. To increase shoe donations, a 5K race was planned in the summer of 2023. The event was extremely successful with hundreds of shoes collected and over $10,000 raised in charitable contributions.

Going The Distance continues to have its annual 5K in Morton, IL along with shoe drives year round. Since its founding, over $25,000 in charitable contributions has been raised. With plans to expand to Champaign, IL, Going The Distance looks to expand its outreach and increase the donations to the Salvation Army for years to come.
