Eric Burger has extensive experience in engineering and research, particularly in the areas of energy systems and algorithm development. As a Graduate Student Researcher at UC Berkeley's Energy, Controls, and Applications Lab, Eric focused on the distributed optimization of thermostatically controlled loads. Eric also developed a new undergraduate course on Cyber Physical Systems during tenure as a Graduate Student Instructor at UC Berkeley. Interning at Nest, Eric designed an adaptive thermal model for HVAC systems and implemented evaluation procedures for thermal models in a parallel computing environment. Currently, as a Staff Algorithm Engineer at Google Nest, Eric leads software engineering in embedded machine learning and optimization algorithms for Nest thermostats. Academic qualifications include a PhD in Systems Engineering, two Master of Science degrees in Computer Science and Energy Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, all from prestigious institutions including UC Berkeley and Swarthmore College.
