Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers is an independent, family-run Highlandwear business based on Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile. 

Founded in 2009 by Gordon Nicolson, who brings over 30 years of experience in industry, we are dedicated to preserving and advancing authentic, hand-sewn kiltmaking. With a focus on quality over volume, we work with trusted Scottish suppliers, using the finest natural materials to create garments that are built to last.

In 2016, we founded the Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy with a simple mission: to standardise the practice of kiltmaking to an exceptional level, whilst securing the future of handmade kiltmaking for generations to come. With the growing saturation of lower-quality garments in the kilt landscape, it’s vital for us to set a benchmark of excellence. At the EKA, not only do we teach kiltmaking, we train our students to a clearly defined standard of craftsmanship.

Alongside bespoke and made-to-measure Highlandwear, GNK offers one of Edinburgh’s largest kilt hire services, a curated range of accessories, bespoke tartan design and registration, and educational experiences through Tartan Talks. Across everything we do, we champion Scottish craftsmanship, sustainability, and heritage - ensuring these skills remain relevant, respected, and kept to the highest standard of excellence.
