Matthew Smith has an extensive work experience spanning over two decades. Matthew began their career in 1998 as an Export Services Manager for SDV. In 2002, they became a Harvest Intern for Robert Mondavi Winery, where they were involved in vineyard and winemaking experiments. Matthew then worked as a Harvest Intern for Joseph Drouhin in 2003, where they were involved in all cellar activities from fermentation to barrel work, as well as lab experiments on color in Pinot. In 2004, Matthew worked as a Harvest Intern for Mitchelton Wines Pty Ltd. In 2011, they became the Winemaker for Jackson Family Wines' Liberated Wines, where they were responsible for creating winemaking direction and stylistic goals for the brand launch. Matthew also served as the Winemaker for Silver Palm Wines and White Rocket Portfolio. In 2016, Matthew became the Owner of OHI Wine Consulting, where they provided winemaking consulting services. Matthew also worked as a Winemaking Consultant for Sunstone Winery. In 2019, Matthew joined In Good Taste Wines as the Head of Winemaking, where they were charged with producing an eclectic mix of wines from multiple regions and countries. In 2015, they had also co-founded GrapeSeed, where they served as a Winemaker.

Matthew Smith attended the University of Michigan from 1986 to 1990, graduating with a BA in Political Science and French Language Studies. From 1988 to 1989, they also attended the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, where they earned a degree in French Culture, studying Literature, Sociology, and Arts. Matthew then attended City College of San Francisco from 1999 to 2001, followed by the University of California, Davis from 2001 to 2003.
