Paul Balança currently serves as the Research Team Lead at Graphcore since January 2022, focusing on projects related to low floating point precision for large language model inference and training, molecular dataset generation using density functional theory on IPUs, and low-level functional Python programming on IPUs. Prior to Graphcore, Paul held the position of Staff Machine Learning Research Engineer at FiveAI from May 2018 to January 2022, leading projects that significantly improved the accuracy of the Dynamic Objects pipeline for autonomous driving. Paul co-founded Robik AI, where a prototype of a level-2 autonomous delivery robot was developed, showcasing advanced real-time computer vision techniques. Academic experience includes postdoctoral research at Queen Mary University of London and Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, along with a Ph.D. from CentraleSupélec. Additional roles included a research internship in biomedical imaging and a project with CNES focusing on software development for small rocket trajectory simulation.
