Kim McLaughlin's work experience started in 1988 as a Drafting Specialist at Allied Signal. Kim then worked at Norton Manufacturing as a Process Engineer from July 1991 to February 1993. Kim returned to Allied Signal as a Product Design employee from 1993 to 1996. Kim McLaughlin worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Schlumberger from 1996 to 1998, where they designed pick and place end effectors for computer chips and provided training on ProEngineer to the engineering department. Kim was an Engineering Coordinator at Honda Engineering from 1998 to 2005, designing jigs and fixtures and managing a new hood, trunk, and tailgate line for the 2006 Civic launch, also training engineers to use ProEngineer. From 2005 to 2007, Kim McLaughlin worked as a Documentation Engineer at NuTone. Currently, they are a Product Engineer at Grede Holdings LLC, designing patterns and core boxes for sand casting of ductile iron parts for various industries.

Kim McLaughlin attended Spring Arbor College, where they studied Management & Organizational Development. They also attended Terra Community College, earning an AS degree in Mechanical Engineering.
