Tom Welsh

Tom Welsh is a Senior Software Engineer at GRIDSIGHT, where they lead backend engineering and infrastructure development and also contributes to frontend work as needed. Tom has significantly improved backend query performance by overhauling caching strategy and tuning queries. Additionally, Tom is responsible for all aspects of cloud infrastructure and DevOps at GRIDSIGHT, including provisioning, deployment, security, monitoring, and observability. Prior to their current role, Tom worked at Appian Corporation as a Cloud Software Engineer II and Cloud Software Engineer. Tom also served as a Consultant and Associate Consultant in Customer Success during their time at Appian. Tom's previous experience includes working as a Casual Academic at UNSW, where they supervised practical laboratory sessions for electrical engineering courses and provided instruction and assessment support to students. Tom also gained RF Engineering work experience at CEA Technologies Pty Limited and served as a Research Intern at the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology. Furthermore, Tom has experience as a Resident Advisor at New College UNSW, where they provided pastoral care to residents and enforced college regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable living environment.

Tom Welsh has a strong educational background in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Tom completed their Master's degree in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2023. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from UNSW in 2019. During their time at UNSW, Tom also pursued a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, which they completed in the same year. Tom further expanded their knowledge by participating in an exchange program at The University of British Columbia, where they pursued a BE BSci degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from 2018 to 2019.

Additionally, Tom has obtained several certifications to enhance their skills. Tom became a CKAD: Certified Kubernetes Application Developer through The Linux Foundation in September 2022. In May 2022, they completed the Group 2 Social/Behavioral Research Investigators and Key Personnel certification from the CITI Program. Tom has also achieved certifications in AWS, including AWS Certified Developer - Associate and AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate, both obtained in August 2021. Furthermore, they obtained the HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate certification from HashiCorp in September 2021. Additionally, Tom has certifications as an Appian Certified Lead Developer and Appian Certified Senior Developer from Appian Corporation, earned in July 2021 and June 2021 respectively. Tom completed the UNSW Engineering Sessional Teaching Staff Development Program in April 2019, and became a Certified ScrumMaster through the Scrum Alliance in February 2020. Tom also completed a Chinese Mandarin Course 1011: Standard (Beginners) from the Centre for Continuing Education in December 2019.
