John Vert has a long and varied work experience. John began their career in 1991 as a Software Development Engineer for the Windows NT Kernel Group at Microsoft where they owned the x86 bootloaders and specified and implemented the first x86 HALs. John also owned the NT registry implementation and designed and built many features and performance enhancements. In 2001, they became a Development Manager for the Netgen Team at Microsoft, where they designed and built the "threedegrees" social communication application. From 2004 to 2012, they held various roles at Microsoft, including Partner Architect, SQL BI, Partner Development Manager, Technical Computing, Partner Architect, High Performance Computing, and Partner Development Manager, High Performance Computing. In 2012, they joined Valve Corporation as a Software Engineer, where they ported the Steam client to Linux and built and maintained SteamOS, a Debian Linux derivative aimed at living-room PC devices running Steam Big Picture and Steam games. John also ported SteamVR and OpenVR to Linux. In 2017, they became CTO & Co-Founder of Groopit.
John Vert attended Virginia Tech from 1987 to 1991, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering.
