Lack of affordable digital devices has become a binding constraint on economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. Over the past two decades, the digital revolution has sparked an explosion of tech-based solutions across nearly every sector: fintech tools that expand financial inclusion, agri-tech platforms that boost productivity and climate resilience, telemedicine solutions that improve healthcare access, and digital systems that make government services more efficient. These innovations hold enormous potential to lift people out of poverty. Yet nearly 700 million people in sub-Saharan Africa—one in every two Africans—cannot afford even the most basic digital devices needed to access them.
