Maria Adele Carrai is an Assistant Professor of Global China Studies at NYU Shanghai, where they explore the history of international law in East Asia and the impact of China's rise on global norms. They co-lead the Research Initiative 'Mapping Global China' and are the author of the book *Sovereignty in China. A Genealogy of a Concept since 1840* and co-editor of *The China Questions 2 - Critical Insights into US-China Relations*. Previously, they held a three-year Marie Curie fellowship at KU Leuven and have been a fellow at several prestigious institutions, including Harvard University and the Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program. Carrai completed their PhD in International Law and Legal Studies at The University of Hong Kong, where they received the Award for Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student for 2015-16.
