Matthew Saunders has over 16 years of work experience in Research and Development, Synthetic Biology, Enzyme Engineering, Microalgae Strain Improvement, Bioinformatics, Human Population Genetics, Genomics, and siRNA/miRNA Therapeutics.

In 2021, they joined Heliae as the Vice President of Research and Development. From 2017 to 2021, they were at Renew Biopharma, Inc. in roles of Executive Director R&D, Director of Research, and Associate Director. In 2015, they were the Manager of Strain Improvement at Heliae. From 2012 to 2015, they were at Sapphire Energy Inc. in roles of Group Leader/Scientist III, Evolutionary Engineering, Group Leader, Evolutionary Engineering, and Scientist II, Trait Discovery. In 2011, they were a Senior Analyst Consultant at Ancestry.com. From 2009 to 2011, they were a Senior Scientist at Merck (Sirna Therapeutics). From 2007 to 2009, they were a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at Rosetta Inpharmatics (Merck). From 2005 to 2007, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago.

Matthew Saunders began their educational journey in 1993 when they attended the University of Washington and obtained a B.S. in Zoology (Genetics). Matthew continued their studies at the University of Arizona, graduating in 2004 with a Ph.D. in Population Genetics. Finally, they completed a Postdoctoral program in Bioinformatics and Genomics at the University of Chicago in 2007.
