Helping Herts Homeless acts as a hostel and a hub. Our charity is run by volunteers, providing temporary accommodation in our hostel, and a hub supporting other organisations aiming to alleviate homelessness and rough sleeping.

Our Hostel, the North Herts Sanctuary on Nightingale Road in Hitchin, provides safe, temporary accommodation for local homeless individuals 365 days a year. Residents are entitled to a hot evening meal, breakfast and a packed lunch. There are showers, wash facilities and a laundry, a communal living / dining area and IT suite. There is also an outdoor recreational area for residents to enjoy We are responsible for the maintenance of the building, and making improvements for the benefit of the residents and staff.

One YMCA (oneymca.org) are responsible for the day to day operational services. They provide targeted support to help address the social and health needs of service users in order for them to ‘move on’ to permanent accommodation. Residents are assessed for issues such as drug and alcohol dependence, mental health and relationship problems. Treatment, training and advice prepare the service users for independent living.

We act as a Hub – The charity distributes money and the donations in kind to the Sanctuary and various other like-minded and deserving organisations.  Our volunteers publicise  the need to help the local homeless, and raise money through a range of regular fundraising events.
