Herzig Engineering was founded in May of 2000 by Bob Herzig, P.E. As Bob puts it, “After completing my MBA, I was teaching power systems coursework at the University of Kansas as an adjunct professor. I used the National Electrical Code as my textbook. During this time, I saw the NFPA 70E begin to mention arc flash. I thought to myself, ‘If this takes off like LOTO and other safety initiatives pushed by OSHA, every company in America is going to need to have these studies done!’” The rest is history. Herzig Engineering began servicing the electrical safety industry in the manufacturing and industrial worlds and segued into working in the commercial, hospital, and university realms as well. When the company was founded, people were getting hurt due to the expense of working on electrical equipment while it is deenergized. Due to the efforts of OSHA, NFPA 70E, and IEEE 1584, incidents are down because the workers are aware of the risk, equipment has and is being labeled, and equipment is being shut off to service. The industry still has a long way to go to get risk in electrical work to an acceptable level, and Herzig Engineering strives to be a key part in that change.
