Mark Sugrue

Mark D. Sugrue, MSN, RN-BC, FHIMSS, managing director, clinical delivery and informatics solutions, leads the strategic and tactical operations of Commonwealth Medicine’s clinical programs, creating a cross-organizational vision for clinical informatics. Collaborating with other senior leaders and key business partners, Sugrue leverages best practices, internal expertise and emerging technologies to develop new clinical products and services in response to market demand.

Sugrue joined Commonwealth Medicine from UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC), where he served as chief nursing informatics officer and associate chief nursing officer, professional practice. He provided leadership for UMMHC’s $700M EHR implementation and optimization of the medical centers’ nursing EHR. Sugrue was also responsible for ongoing professional development and education of the 3,000+ member nursing workforce and served as a FEMA-certified incident commander.

Previously, Sugrue served as Lahey Hospital and Medical Center’s very first chief nursing informatics officer, responsible for all technology and nursing education and for leading the organization’s efforts in EHR implementation and optimization. Prior to Lahey, he worked in a variety of management consultant roles for several well-known health management consulting firms, including PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Blum Shapiro Consulting, KMPG Bearing Point and Arthur Andersen. He has also served as a medic in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Sugrue holds bachelor’s degrees in biology, psychology and nursing, and a master’s degree in nursing leadership from Regis College. He is a founding member and on the Board for the New England Nursing Informatics Consortium (NENIC). He is a past governing director at the Alliance for Nursing Informatics and is a member of the American College of Health Care Executives.
