A. Rae Smith has extensive experience in urban design and planning. A. Rae began their career as an Architectural Intern at NBBJ in 2008, where they gained experience in architectural design. A. Rae then worked as an Urban Design Intern at EDAW, where they participated in the design of urban parks and economic development projects. Smith also worked as an Architectural Intern at Square Feet Studio, where they focused on structural design and construction management. A. Rae later joined Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company as a Charrette Assistant, assisting with planning and community engagement. Smith then worked as a Project Urban Designer at shieldsDESIGN, where they developed sustainable development plans and reviewed engineering and urban design projects. A. Rae further expanded their skills as an Urban Designer at CBT Architects, working on district development plans and campus planning. Smith then worked as an Urban Design Project Manager at ICON architecture, where they managed various projects including mixed-use developments and master planned communities. A. Rae then joined Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) as an Assistant Project Manager, coordinating confidential contracts and overseeing large-scale urban infill and redevelopment projects. Most recently, Smith has been working at HOK as a Principal and Senior Planner + Urban Designer.
A. Rae Smith, RA, AICP has a strong educational background in the fields of City and Regional Planning as well as Architecture. A. Rae obtained their Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where they studied from 2002 to 2006. Later, they pursued both a Masters degree in City and Regional Planning and a Masters degree in Architecture from the same institution, completing their studies in 2009.
In addition to their academic achievements, A. Rae Smith has also obtained several certifications to enhance their professional qualifications. A. Rae became a Registered Architect in the state of Washington in June 2014. Furthermore, they received the AICP certification (American Institute of Certified Planners) from the American Planning Association in 2010. Additionally, they obtained the LEED AP certification from the Green Building Certification Institute in 2007.
