Created by Napoleon the 1st in 1801 and inaugurated in 1852 to welcome its eminent members, including Louis Pasteur, Gustave Eiffel, André Michelin, the Lumière brothers, Léon Gaumont and Marie Curie, the Hôtel de l'Industrie (Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale) was one of the main centres of innovation in Paris in the 19th century. A pioneering venue, the Hôtel de l'Industrie was the first building to be equipped with electricity and heating. The birthplace of cinema, it hosted the first historic demonstration of sound with a phonautograph in 1860 by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville. Then, a few years later in 1895, the Lumière brothers organised their very first screening there in the presence of Léon Gaumont – the founding act of the cinema industry – in the Salon Lumière, which now bears their name. The Hôtel de l'Industrie opens the doors of its magnificent mansion on Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés for a unique experience of French excellence in art, craftsmanship and industry. Having retained the festive spirit of the iconic Saint-Germain-des-Prés district and its former jazz club, located beneath the Hôtel de l'Industrie: the Club Saint-Germain – frequented by Boris Vian, Juliette Gréco, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, among others - It invites you to step inside its iconic reception rooms. With its unrivalled history, it remains one of the cultural, social and political hotspots of the Left Bank. The events organised at the Hôtel de l'Industrie reflect the values and objectives of the Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale, namely: promoting businesses, innovation, art and expertise.
