Peter Garst

Software Engineer at Human Longevity

Peter Garst has a diverse work experience spanning several decades. Peter began their career in 1979 at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories as an MTS. Peter then worked at Cygnet Systems as an engineer, where they focused on image compression and developed software for a high-performance image workstation.

In 1986, Garst became a research assistant at Imperial College London. From 1990 to 1992, they founded Bloomsbury Software Group, where they built a symbolic debugger for Yacc compatible grammars and parsers. During this time, their customers included UC Berkeley and IBM.

Garst joined Communications Intelligence Corporation in 1993 as a Senior Engineer. Peter worked on projects involving cursive handwriting recognition, Chinese handwriting recognition, and signature verification. Additionally, they developed a distributed processing system for training and testing jobs.

In 2007, Garst became the Chief Scientist at Enventra, Inc., where they developed the MoboMath system for recognition and editing of handwritten math expressions. Following that, they joined the University of California Santa Cruz Extension in 2011 as an Instructor, teaching the course Computational Biology with Java and publishing the textbook Mastering Java through Biology.

Garst's most recent work experience was at Human Longevity, Inc. starting in 2014. As a Software Engineer, they worked on genomic data mining, machine learning, and image processing using Python, C++, and Java. Peter built predictive models for phenotypes and worked on machine learning and image processing for MRI images using Keras, TensorFlow, VTK, and ImageJ.

Peter Garst obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Oberlin College. Peter then pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they completed an M.S. in Computer Science and earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics. No specific start or end years were provided for these educational experiences.
