HyCavern is an ambitious project coordinated by SINTEF and funded by the EU Clean Hydrogen focused on advancing underground hydrogen storage through mined, lined rock cavern technology. 

HyCavern aims to to make large-scale underground hydrogen storage more practical and bankable for future energy systems.

We bring together expertise, advancing steel and concrete lining innovations designed specifically for the demanding conditions of underground hydrogen storage. These material improvements are intended to enhance durability, performance, and long-term integrity of lined rock caverns.

HyCavern is developing novel monitoring technologies to improve operational oversight, detect potential issues early, and support robust risk management throughout the storage lifecycle. By integrating improved monitoring approaches, the project aims to strengthen confidence in underground hydrogen storage operations and support higher safety standards across the sector.

We are creating tools for site selection of lined rock cavern construction. These tools are designed to support evidence-based decision-making by assessing geological, technical, and practical suitability factors. Better site selection can reduce project risk, improve efficiency, and accelerate implementation timelines.

The project contributes to the development of reliable underground hydrogen storage infrastructure—an essential enabler for balancing renewable energy, improving energy system flexibility, and supporting long-term decarbonisation goals.
