Achim Maas studied political science, history and sociology at Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Bradford, focusing mainly on peace and conflict research, in particular research into the causes of war and arms control. As a project manager (2006-2012) and senior project manager (2006-2010)at adelphi he carried out research on climate change, energy security, and resource governance - particularly in developing and emerging economies - at the behest of different government departments, the EU, the UN, and other organisations. Achim Maas joined the IASS in 2012. Currently, he is coordinating the Fellow Programme and the Incubator of the IASS.

The Institute’s central research topics are global sustainability policy and new governance models, especially with regard to democratic institutions and decision-making processes, innovative solutions for future energy systems, sustainable resource consumption, and the challenges facing our Earth system as a result of climate change and air pollution.
