John Richards

Distinguished Research Staff Member and Manager

John Richards is a distinguished research scientist at IBM, recently retired, who joined the Computer Science research staff at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center after earning a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology. Over the years, they have held various research and management roles, focusing on areas such as interpersonal communications, ubiquitous computing, and web accessibility. John has led teams quantifying programmer productivity in peta-scale computing and is currently exploring human-centered AI, including cooperative conversations between humans and intelligent agents. Their contributions have been recognized by numerous professional organizations, earning them accolades such as Fellow of the ACM and the SIGCHI Lifetime Practice Award. John has also served in leadership roles within several ACM communities and garnered multiple awards for outstanding achievements at IBM.
