Tom Mitchell has a diverse and extensive work experience in environmental and climate change organizations. Tom is currently serving as the Executive Director at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), starting in 2022. Prior to this role, they were the Director at the Climate-KIC International Foundation from 2020 to 2022.

From 2018 to 2022, Tom Mitchell held the position of Chief Strategy Officer at Climate-KIC and also served as a Director from 2016 to 2018.

Before joining Climate-KIC, they worked as the Head of Climate Change Programme at the Overseas Development Institute from 2010 to 2016.

Tom Mitchell's expertise in climate change is further highlighted by their role as a Co-ordinating Lead Author at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change from 2010 to 2013.

Tom began their career as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies from 2005 to 2010, after completing their PhD at University College London from 2002 to 2005.

Tom Mitchell's education history began in 1996 when they attended the University of Cambridge and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree in Geography in 1999. Tom then pursued further studies at Rutgers University, where they completed a Master of Arts degree in Geography from 2000 to 2002. Finally, they attended UCL from 2002 to 2006, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Disaster Risk Reduction.
