Illovo Bio-Based Solutions’ business drives the innovation and commercialisation of value-added products derived from our core sugar operations.

By harnessing the by-products of sugar manufacture from sugarcane — fibre and molasses — we optimise the value extracted from every stick of cane.
This approach enables us to extend our integrated portfolio and maximise returns, leveraging our advanced bio refinery located in Sezela, South Africa. Here, we manufacture furfural and its derivatives, including furfuryl alcohol, diacetyl, and 2,3 pentanedione. Our Merebank distillery produces high grade ethyl alcohol.

In addition to serving customers in South Africa, our Bio-Based products are exported globally, reaching markets across the rest of the African continent, Europe, the United States, Asia, the Middle East, India, and China.

Our bio-based products are derived from non-GMO cane operations that are sustainably accredited under the ProTerra Social Responsibility and Environmental Sustainability Standard, and our manufacturing operations carry ISO accreditation.
