Eric Green, MD, PhD, is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Illumina. As Illumina’s medical leader, Dr. Green is responsible for guiding global efforts to advance the clinical application of genomics, expand access to precision medicine, and increase diversity in genomic data to improve healthcare for people worldwide.
Prior to joining Illumina, Dr. Green worked at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more than 31 years, serving as the NHGRI Director for his final 15 years. Under his leadership, NHGRI became a driving force in integrating genomics into medicine and public health. Before being appointed as the institute’s director, Dr. Green served multiple other leadership roles within NHGRI, including as the institute’s Scientific Director for nearly a decade and as the founding Director of the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center.
Throughout his multi-decade career, Dr. Green has consistently been at the forefront of genomics, helping transform the field from research-driven discovery to clinical practice. His research and leadership contributions have included playing a prominent role in the Human Genome Project, delivering critical insights into genome structure and function through comparative genomics, identifying multiple human disease genes, and accelerating applications of genomics in healthcare.
Dr. Green earned his MD and PhD from Washington University School of Medicine in 1987.
