Matthew Applegate

Matthew Applegate is a highly experienced engineer with a focus on hardware and electronic systems. Currently serving as a Principal Hardware Engineer at Imagination Technologies since May 2025, Matthew contributes to the PowerVR hardware team on ultra-low power GPU IP cores with AI acceleration. Prior to this, Matthew held the position of Principal Architect at Allegro MicroSystems, where design and development of a proprietary memory controller for LiDAR ROIC ASIC technology were undertaken. As a co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Nu Quantum, Matthew attracted over £5 million in funding and expanded the company significantly. Matthew's earlier experience includes roles as a Research Associate and Ph.D. Researcher at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, as well as positions at Toshiba Research Europe Limited, Plastic Logic, BlueArc, Altera, and Arithmatica, focusing on various advanced technologies and system designs. Matthew earned a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Cambridge and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Warwick.
