That means that 95% of what people learn and know about science and, by extension, the environment comes from people, places and experiences outside of formal school classrooms. These sources of informal learning are truly the places where people connect to nature, learn about science, engage in inquiry, and come face to face with scientific phenomena and the environment. Institutions such as zoos, museums, aquariums and science centers play a critical role in creating a scientific and environmentally literate society.
