Tyson Gern is a Lead Developer and Cofounder at Initial Capacity. Tyson previously served as a Delivery Lead at VMware Tanzu Labs from 2020 to 2021. From 2016 to 2020, they were a Director at Pivotal, where they led teams of practitioners to empower thousands of engineers globally to build and run modern software, and co-created the award-winning Platform Acceleration Lab (PAL). Prior to that, they were an Engineering Manager and Software Engineer at Pivotal Labs from 2013 to 2016. Tyson started the Pivotal Dublin office with a core group of five employees and expanded the office to 25+. Tyson was also an expert in Java/Spring, Typescript/Angular, Ruby/Rails, and Javascript. From 2008 to 2013, Tyson was a Mathematics Department Graduate Committee Member, PhD in Mathematics, and Graduate Student Instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Tyson's primary area of research was algebraic combinatorics.

Tyson Gern obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Art from St. Olaf College in 2008, following their studies from 2004 to 2008. Tyson then attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where they received a PhD and MA in Mathematics between 2008 and 2013. In 2019, they obtained two certifications from Pivotal Software, Inc., a Pivotal Certified Application Architect (Java) in May and a Pivotal Certified Developer (Java) in March.
