Joel S.

Joel S. has a diverse work experience spanning various fields. Joel is currently working at Intellegens as a Principal Machine Learning Scientist, where they lead the application of machine learning models to complex business problems, oversees client projects, and provides technical guidance to the machine learning consultancy team. Joel also identifies new development areas for inhouse machine learning algorithms and collaborates with the wider machine learning science and engineering teams.

Before joining Intellegens, Joel worked as a Machine Learning Scientist at the same company, specializing in machine learning consultancy across domains such as materials science, chemical formulation, and clinical research. Joel applied advanced data manipulation and predictive modeling techniques to uncover correlations within high-dimensional datasets.

Prior to their roles at Intellegens, Joel completed a PhD program in metallurgy and material science at the University of Leicester, sponsored by Rolls-Royce. Their research focused on understanding pattern formation in directionally solidified superalloys, resulting in the development of a novel supervised machine learning algorithm that extracted microstructural data from images. This innovation improved the understanding of crucial process-property relationships within critical jet-engine components.

During their time at the University of Leicester, Joel also served as a Higher Education Teaching Assistant, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the subjects of raw data analysis and computer-aided design and simulation techniques. Joel was certified as an associate fellow of the higher education academy (AFHEA).

Joel's work experience also includes a role as a Thru-Hiker at the Continental Divide Trail Coalition, where they hiked the 3100 mile Continental Divide Trail in 2017, navigating challenging terrain and camping overnight in the wilderness. Additionally, they have previous experience at Network Rail as a Project Engineer/Management Assistant, Morrisons as a Sales Assistant, and CHQ Architects Ltd as an Architectural Technician.

Joel S. began their education journey in 2011 at the University of Leicester, where they pursued a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a year in industry. Joel completed this degree in 2016. Following that, they enrolled in the University of Leicester for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Metallurgy and Material Science, which they pursued from 2016 to 2021.

In terms of additional certifications, Joel obtained the "Working with Wellbeing" certification from NEBOSH in January 2023. Joel also completed various data science and deep learning courses, including the IBM Data Science Professional Certificate, the Deep Learning Specialization from DeepLearning.AI, and the Data Science Course 2021: Complete Data Science Bootcamp from 365 Careers, all of which were obtained in 2021.

Moreover, Joel achieved the Chartered Engineer (CEng) designation from The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) in March 2021. Joel also became a Professional Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (MIMMM) and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) in the same month.

Other certifications include the ESI Solidification Course from Calcom ESI SA in May 2019, the Continental Divide Trail certification from the Continental Divide Trail Coalition in September 2017, the Leicester Award from the University of Leicester in March 2015, and the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award from The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in June 2010.
