Christian Etmann

Christian Etmann is a seasoned expert in AI-based video coding with a current role as Senior Member of Scientific Staff at InterDigital, Inc. since October 2025, following the company's acquisition of Deep Render, where Christian served as Senior Lead Research Scientist from August 2021 to October 2025. At Deep Render, responsibilities included managing a team focused on developing the world’s first AI-based video codec for mobile devices. Prior to this, Christian held various research positions at the University of Cambridge from January 2020 to August 2021, concentrating on generative AI and deep learning in medical imaging, and the University of Bremen from October 2016 to September 2019, focusing on neural networks and machine learning. Christian's academic credentials include a Postdoctoral degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Industrial Mathematics from the University of Bremen.
