The International School Ruhr in Essen founded in 2010, is an English-language international all-day school with an affiliated preschool for three- to six-year-olds It is a fully state-accredited school and one of more than 5,700 authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools worldwide. 

In the primary school (ages three to eleven) the students follow the Primary Years Programme (PYP), which is an internationally recognized curriculum framework which places the student at the center of the learning experience.  Inquiry-based learning and transdisciplinary learning is at the heart of the PYP curriculum model.  This prepares students for the academic rigors of the secondary school. The learning content of grades six to eight follows an inquiry based learning approach where students are encouraged to cultivate 21st Century learning skills. Grades nine and ten follow the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), a programme developed by Cambridge University. Grades eleven and twelve follow for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Certain subject combinations and grade averages guarantee the nationwide recognition of both degrees as Mittlere Reife (after grade ten) or as Internationales Abitur (after grade twelve). The International Baccalaureate Diploma entitles students to study at universities worldwide. 

Around 160 students from 30 nations, and qualified teachers from around the world, make up the International School Ruhr. The school is run as an international private all-day school according to the concept of the Swiss "SBW Haus des Lernens Holding AG".
