Sumon Kumar Ray has a diverse range of work experience spanning multiple roles and industries. Sumon Kumar started their career as an M.Sc. Student at the University of Calcutta in 2000 and completed their degree in 2002. Sumon Kumar then went on to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Sheffield, funded by EPSRC, where they focused on the development of Quantum Dot Superluminescent LEDs and Ridge wave-guide lasers emitting at and around 1310nm. After completing their Ph.D. in 2007, they continued at the University of Sheffield as a Research Associate, leading two projects simultaneously. In one project, they successfully developed and delivered a prototype of an array of UV GaN LEDs for a Scanning Near field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) system. In the second project, they developed and demonstrated the functionality of a cheap Organic transistors oscillator.

In 2008, Sumon joined Avago Technologies as a Senior R&D Engineer, where they led the development of 12X10G VCSEL Array and 16G Singlet VCSEL. Sumon Kumar was responsible for various tasks, including device layout specification, device architecture, Epi-structure growth, process flow design, introduction of new process modules, test data analysis, reliability, product life cycle study, and failure analysis. Sumon Kumar successfully released the products into production with high yields. Sumon Kumar worked at Avago Technologies until September 2015.

In 2015, Sumon joined IQE as a Product Manager, responsible for managing various product lines. Sumon Kumar then transitioned into the role of Director of Customer Engineering and Director of Business Development, starting in March 2022 and March 2023 respectively. No end dates are provided for their roles at IQE, indicating that they are currently employed there.

Sumon Kumar Ray completed their education in a chronological manner. Sumon Kumar started by earning a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Electronics from the University of Calcutta, attending from 1997 to 2000. Afterwards, they pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Electronic Science from the same institution, completing it between 2000 and 2002. Subsequently, Ray enrolled at The University of Sheffield, where they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. This doctoral program was undertaken from 2003 until 2007.
