Jakmel Ekspresyon (JE) is a space of non-discrimination, with a holistic approach to the lives of local Jacmelians. We believe that healthy lives and community needs creativity, knowledge and robust well being to advance in a sustainable way. The Haitian staff is constantly looking at the gaps in their educational system to find areas of need.

As JE is an arts based organization, we mix many of our classes to include creative outlets with Science and technology. STEAM education has naturally grown out of this focus and many times allows students to be playful and exploratory with many of the subjects they learn. Mixing arts with the other subjects also allows students to share their newfound knowledge with their community through performances and exhibitions. This pathway has encouraged citizenship and greater impact in the community at large. 
JE has a unique leadership structure for education. The curriculum is dictated by the students, for the students. They take classes, suggest classes, find their favorite faculty and even teach classes. There is a culture of trust, which acts as a platform that nourishes leadership and invites youth to practice creating the world they want. Some youth have been co-creators as early as 15 years old. 

Giving youth the power to be leaders in their own education has many benefits. Former JE students teach. The students keep our curriculum relevant to the local community. The students become the positive role models for younger Haitians. At this critical moment, the youth must be lifted up and explore leadership. They are the future!
