Derek Smith

Derek 'Grinner' Smith is an experienced aviation professional with a diverse background spanning multiple decades. Currently serving as an A321 Type Rating Instructor and Line Training Captain at Jet2.com and Jet2holidays since December 2022, Derek also holds the position of Head of Training and Senior Regional Examiner for the British Gliding Association since May 2014. Prior to this, Derek was a Line Training Captain and A320/321 Captain at easyJet from March 2004 to December 2022, and served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force from July 1983 to March 2004, specializing as a fast-jet pilot on Lightnings and Tornado F3 aircraft, along with being a Qualified Weapons Instructor. Educationally, Derek attended Filey School and Scarborough Sixth Form College.
