Derek Pedersen started their career in 1997 as an Estimator Intern at Hensel Phelps Construction Co. Derek then interned as a Field Engineer in 1999 at the same company. In 2000, they joined JVA as a Design Engineer and later progressed to become a Project Engineer and then a Project Manager. At JVA, they performed calculations for various construction components and managed projects, engineers, and clients.

Derek Pedersen earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder between 1996 and 1999.
