In 1986, fifth-generation winemaker Geoff Hardy discovered what he believed to be the perfect site for producing exceptional cool-climate grapes — a gently sloping, north-facing property nestled in the southern reaches of the Adelaide Hills. At the time, this was uncharted territory for viticulture. Undeterred by scepticism, Geoff planted the first vines in what would become the pioneering vineyard of the Kuitpo region. In a nod to this milestone, the site was named the K1 Vineyard — ‘K’ for Kuitpo and ‘1’ signifying its status as the region’s first.

Over the decades, K1 has grown into one of Australia’s most highly regarded single-estate vineyards, producing ultra-premium wines that consistently reflect the purity, elegance and complexity of their origin. The vineyard’s cool climate, diverse soil profiles, and sustainable viticultural practices come together to create wines of distinction and finesse.

Today, the K1 cellar door, with its lakeside setting and grand design that feels as though it’s been transported from rural Europe, offers an unforgettable tasting experience. Surrounded by forest and vines, it has been named one of Australia’s Top 10 Cellar Door Experiences by a leading industry publication — a testament to both the site’s beauty and the warmth of the hospitality.

K1 and Wines by Geoff Hardy have garnered significant acclaim, including being named Australian Winery of the Year by Winestate Magazine in both 2012 and 2014. Wine Review has also recognised K1 as one of the top wineries in Australia, reinforcing its place among the country’s most respected wine producers.
