Wouter Smet is a research scientist with a strong background in plant biotechnology and biology. Smet completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Medical Laboratory Research from Avans Hogeschool Breda (2008-2012) and a Master of Science in Plant Biotechnology from Wageningen University and Research Centre (2012-2014). Experience includes an internship at Utrecht University in the Department of Biology focusing on root development and transcription factors (February 2011 - October 2011), as well as a postdoctoral scientist role at VIB, where work centered on enhancing phosphorus use efficiency in plants (February 2019 - January 2022). Smet also pursued a PhD at Wageningen UR, studying the control of periclinal cell divisions during vascular development in Arabidopsis thaliana (October 2014 - November 2018). Currently, Smet holds a Global Fellowship/Postdoctoral Researcher position at KAUST, translating drought resistance from the desert plant C. procera to crop species (February 2022 - August 2025). Further internships, such as one in Plant Systems Biology, added depth to the expertise in root development and peptide involvement.
