The Kirkhouse Trust is dedicated to enabling the use of science and technology in Africa and India to improve food and nutrition security. We support the development of improved legume crops for smallholder farmers—among the most vulnerable yet vital food producers in these regions.

Our work strengthens local scientific capacity by providing research grants, laboratory support, training, equipment, and technical expertise to advance molecular breeding and marker-assisted selection. We focus on legumes such as common bean. through regional breeding consortia, hands-on grant management, seed production support, and long-term scientific partnerships, we help deliver improved, climate-resilient crop varieties.

Our “Stress Tolerant Orphan Legumes” (STOL) initiative explores underutilised crops with strong potential to withstand harsh climates in the Sahel and Rajasthan.

KT is committed to sustainable crop improvement, capacity building, and engaging partners and government agencies to demonstrate how targeted investment in agricultural science can transform lives at scale.
