Michael Levy began their education at Union High School from 1985 to 1987. Michael then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1987 to 1991, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Government. After completing their undergraduate studies, they enrolled at the University of Kentucky, where they earned their Master of Arts degree in Political Science from 1991 to 1994. Michael continued their education at the same institution and completed their Ph.D. in Political Science with a focus on International Relations/Comparative Politics from 1991 to 1996.
