KONTEKST is an open, grassroots collective of anthropologists, filmmakers, artists and storytellers committed to reshaping how we encounter and produce ethnographic images, stories and sensations. We work across critical, sensory and experimental practices in film, art and storytelling, aiming to make these modes of inquiry and expression accessible beyond academic or institutional boundaries.

Our practice is rooted in critical engagement with the histories and politics of representation. We question whose voices are heard, how knowledge is produced, and how context itself can clarify or distort meaning. Rather than reinforcing hierarchical “expert” models, we prioritise polyvocal, non-hierarchical, anti-expert and decolonial approaches to cultural production and exchange.

We create space for shared learning, experimentation and dialogue through live events, open-access archives, collaborative projects and free submissions that welcome emerging makers, thinkers and audiences. Our work foregrounds sensory and embodied ways of knowing, valuing what is felt and experienced as much as what is documented or written.

KONTEKST strives to build inclusive, community-centred platforms that support early-career and critically-minded practitioners, foster creative collaborations, and open up critical cultural practice to those who might not otherwise encounter it. We are shaped by the people and perspectives who take part in our collective - and we are always open to expanding who that includes.
