Alfred Kim has been working in the medical field since 2005. Alfred started as a Research Fellow at Washington University School of Medicine, investigating the roles of B cells in glomerular diseases and exome sequencing patients with autoimmune diseases. Alfred was also a Trainee in the Physician-Scientist Training Program there. In 2008, they became an Instructor of Rheumatology at Becker Professional Education. In 2011, they joined Washington University in St. Louis as Co-Director of the Lupus Clinic and Instructor of Medicine. Alfred was also a Member of the Subcommittee for Early Career Investigators in the Committee for Research at the American College of Rheumatology. In 2015, they became an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Pathology & Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine, where they run an independent research group investigating the role of complement in systemic lupus erythematosus and the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in immunosuppressed autoimmune patients. In 2020, they joined the Rheumatology Research Foundation's Scientific Advisory Council, the Covid-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance's Clinical and Scientific Committee, and OMERACT (Outcome Measures in Rheumatology) SLE Working Group. In 2021, they became a Co-Investigator in the Landmark Lupus Study at the Lupus Research Alliance, and in 2022 they were appointed Chief Medical Officer at Kypha.
Alfred Kim began their educational journey at The Blake School. Alfred then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where they earned a BA in Biochemistry in 1996. Following this, they attended Drexel University College of Medicine and obtained an MD/PhD in Immunology in 2005. In 2008, they became a Diplomate in Internal Medicine with the American Board of Internal Medicine. In 2011, they became a Diplomate in Rheumatology with the same institution.
