Joel took a break from formal education and joined the Dallas County Sheriff's Academy in 2007. During this time, they completed their Basic Peace Officers Course. In 2009 to 2010, they studied Web Design at Ivy Tech Community College.

Joel's education journey did not stop there. Joel served in the United States Army from 2011 to 2015, undertaking various training programs. Joel completed Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, and the Warrior Leader Course during their time in the military.

In 2019, Joel returned to education and attended Dallas Baptist University, pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Communication. Joel completed this degree in 2020.

Alongside their formal education, Joel also acquired additional certifications. In 2011, they obtained the Basic Peace Officer Proficiency certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Joel later obtained the Ammunition Handler certification in 2012 and the TS/SCI certification in 2013, both while serving in the US Army.
