Jim Apple is a highly experienced software engineer and engineering manager with a strong background in distributed systems and data management. Currently serving as a Software Engineer at LanceDB since 2025, Jim previously held senior engineering roles at companies including Voltron Data, where development of cluster elasticity for a distributed SQL engine on NVIDIA GPUs was led. Significant contributions were made as Project Management Committee Chair for Impala at The Apache Software Foundation, overseeing community growth and multiple version releases. At Facebook and Netflix, Jim managed engineering teams to enhance data warehousing and processing capabilities, further building on an extensive career that includes roles at Cloudera, Google, and On Time Systems. Jim holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Virginia and a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Oregon.
