You have more power over your world than you have over yourself.

You can hire and fire, raise and build, burn it down and start over. And there is one thing you cannot make yourself do, or stop doing. The conversation you keep not having. The executive you keep keeping. The bad news that stopped reaching you. You have known it for years. Knowing has not changed it.

The question you do not say out loud: am I the problem?

Yes. And that may be the best news you have heard in a long time. If you are the one making the choices that produce the outcomes, you are the one who can learn to choose differently.

Long before the company, you drew a few conclusions about yourself. Your mind built rules so you would never feel them again. They have been running your leadership ever since, sounding like good sense. That is your inner architecture.

Leadering does inner architecture work with founding CEOs who run companies of 25 to 250 people, individually, with partnerships, and with executive teams. Not open-ended coaching: defined six-month arcs with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Naming the rule is the start, not the work. The work is meeting it while it is live, under real pressure, in the rooms where it actually runs, until the new choice stops costing effort. Then you do the thing you could not do: have the conversation, make the call, let go.

Founder David Heaps sat in the seat before he worked on the people in it: former COO, then Vistage Chair. His book, Inner Architecture, is forthcoming. Sixteen named client letters at leadering.com.

Start with the Inner Architecture Audit. Ninety minutes. Complimentary. One live constraint, traced to the belief underneath it and the rules that belief built. You leave with a written Architecture Map: what we found, where it came from, what it is costing you, and what you can start doing about it now. No pitch. Real work.
