Luminous BioSolutions provides high-frequency naphthenic acid monitoring for oil sands water treatment. We built a bacterial biosensor and data platform that give operators, regulators, and communities the monitoring data that current methods cannot deliver at operational scale.

The monitoring gap is real. The Oil Sands Mining Water Steering Committee confirmed in 2025 that no standardized method for measuring naphthenic acids exists across commercial laboratories. High-resolution mass spectrometry is the gold standard for compliance, but turnaround runs weeks and capacity is limited to a few commercial providers in Canada. Operators managing active treatment systems need data faster than that.

Our biosensor measures what naphthenic acids do to living cells, not just their molecular structure. Three bacterial panels, each targeting a different class of naphthenic acids, deliver compound-class data in 24 to 72 hours. Field-validated at Imperial Oil's Kearl GROW Constructed Wetland pilot over the 2024-2025 treatment season. High HRMS correlation. Published in ACS Synthetic Biology, September 2024.

We complement HRMS. We do not replace it. HRMS sets the baseline and validates for compliance. The biosensor fills everything in between. Together, they create a monitoring program that is both scalable and scientifically defensible.
