We are Sheena MacKinnon & Karen Coleman from Lyra Voices. We run singing groups in Glasgow, helping women develop their voices & learn to sing with confidence. We take pride in creating a warm, relaxed environment where we encourage women to be themselves & let their personalities shine through music. We cover a range of musical styles & our focus on the voice allows us to identify vocal issues early, & create tailored harmonies to suit the group.
By combining the teaching of technique with performance, fun and friendship we provide a more fully rounded singing experience than is possible with a traditional choir or individual vocal tuition.
Our major obsession is proving that singing can change women’s lives, with positive impacts on their physical & mental wellbeing, social connection, self-esteem & confidence. We specialize in the female voice, & our women-only classes provide a safe space for creative expression.
In our experience, we have found there are many blocks to women singing. These can be practical (e.g. family responsibilities), psychological (lack of confidence, guilt at taking “me time”) or based on negative experiences (e.g. being told they couldn’t sing).
We try to make the process easier by removing barriers to joining our classes. We do not hold auditions, there is no need to read music & we make sure all our materials are accessible.
We provide a high quality, reasonably priced learning experience with a variety of practical resources, catering for women at every stage of their singing journey, & with an appreciation of differing learning styles.
Once they have uncovered a voice they are proud to share, we help them with performance technique which they can put into practice performing at external events.
There is also a dedicated performance group “Songbirds @Lyra”, for women with more performance experience.
We have a proven track record of helping women discover their musical potential & becoming more confident as individuals & performers.
